After a seven-year hiatus from making films, Rogue One AND Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is back with a new sci-fi movie titled The creator. This is a movie I’ve been to and was pretty excited to see. That first trailer that was released blew me away and set my expectations for the film at a high level. I finally had the opportunity to watch the film over the weekend and I’m happy to say that the film lived up to those expectations. This is one of the best science fiction films made in recent years.
The film is great cinematic storytelling on a grand and epic scale and takes viewers on a familiar journey, yet with a unique vision. You can definitely see the films and directors that influenced this film, especially those of James Cameron AND Neill Blomkamp. But Edwards takes the story of a man protecting a child-like AI robot and makes it about him. The film felt very similar to a Vietnam War film, but set in the distant future in an alternate sci-fi universe.
This sci-fi story has heart and soul, and while the film is visually stunning, The creator it goes beyond its visual wonder. The foundation of the story is her richly layered characters, whose personal journeys are beautifully intertwined with the film’s setting. It is the synthesis of an adventurous philosophical research and raw human emotions.
The director tells a story that explores some big life, social and political issues and lets the audience immerse themselves in them, making the viewing experience more personal. It was really interesting to watch this story unfold, and it’s one of the few sci-fi films that affected me emotionally.
The film is set in the future in a time where there is a war between the human race and artificial intelligence. Joshua, a former Special Forces agent, is recruited to hunt down and kill an elusive architect of advanced artificial intelligence believed to pose a grave threat to the world. When Joshua finds the weapon, he discovers that it is actually an artificial intelligence in the form of a child, and ends up forming a strong bond and relationship with it. There’s a lot more depth to the story, but I’ll let you watch the movie and experience the entire story for yourself.
The creator also has an incredibly strong cast and their performances bring the narrative to life, making the story and the relationships between the characters real and deeply emotional. Especially the bond between Joshua and the AI child. Movie stars John David WashingtonGemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Start), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), Madeleine Yuna Voyles AND Allison Janney (I, Tonya).
The creator it’s easily Gareth Edwards’ best film to date and I hope he continues to tell great stories with the films he makes!
