Netflix has released the first trailer for the new intense psychological thriller Leave the world behind. The film comes from the creator of Mr. Robot, Sam Emailand becomes the protagonist Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan HawkeAND Kevin Bacon. It actually sounds like a really crazy movie!
In the film, “Amanda and her husband Clay rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their children, Archie and Rose. Their vacation is soon turned upside down when two strangers, GH and his daughter Ruth, arrive at night, bringing news of a mysterious cyber attack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families grapple with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to grapple with their place in a collapsing world.
Esmail had previously spoken about receiving notes on the script from the former president, Barack Obama, who is one of the film’s producers, and those notes had scared him: “In the original drafts of the script, I definitely pushed things much further than than they were originally.movies, and President Obama, with his experience, was able to explain to me a little bit how things might play out in reality. I write what I think is fiction, for the most part, I try to keep it as true to life as possible, but I’m exaggerating and overdramatizing. And to hear a former president say you’re out of your mind about some details… I thought I was very wrong! The fact that he said that scared the hell out of me.
With the film, Esmail attempted to create a type of disaster film different from the ones he grew up with, and explained: “The disaster genre is one of my favorite genres, and the trick we used in this film, which differs from Most disaster films is that in that genre the focus, the priority of the narrative, is on the scenes. It depends on the spectacle of whatever disaster may be for that story, and the characters were secondary to that. They are more there to react and become the avatar of the audience. What I think Rumaan did so well in the novel, and what I tried to capture in the film, is to reverse the situation and focus on the characters and their reaction. The spectacle of the disaster is secondary and distant ”.
The film is also the protagonist Myha’la Herrold, Farrah MackenzieAND Charlie Evans. Leave the world behind will be released in theaters on December 8th!
