Todd McFarlaneThe comic book character Spawn is making his grand debut in the Call of Duty video game series with the upcoming Call of Duty: Warzone AND Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 update. If you think this might be a strange crossover choice, McFarlane explains how it all works seamlessly and naturally.
Speaking to ComingSoon, McFarlane explained that before Spawn became Spawn, the iconic comic book character was a former member of the military named Al Simmons. He went on to say that there’s a natural military aspect that makes Spawn perfect for Call of Duty. He said:
“Well, let’s talk about the character itself. Right under the costume mask is a guy named Al Simmons, more specifically, Lieutenant Colonel Al Simmons. So, literally from number one, there has been the presence of the military in the mythology of this character. So, as well as being popular on the comics front for 30 years. There’s a natural military aspect to it that I think probably makes it a little easier and smoother to integrate into the Call of Duty game than if you just parachuted other licensed products into it.”
McFarlane also talked about how he and the team behind Modern Warfare 2 wanted Spawn to have different iterations, making sure those designs fit the game they were creating:
“So when we were having conversations with the development team, we talked about it more, instead of just talking about Spawn or Spawn with big weapons. There are iterations—not just in the comic, but also in his toy side—as Commando Spawn, dressed in his Desert Storm look, his military look, and then Al Simmons himself, before becoming Spawn; he was just tough in the army.”
“He was in special operations. So I think when everyone thought about it, I think they said, ‘Hey, let’s just do Spawn.’ It would be nice.’ And then we kind of expanded, and that’s why it’s not just the OG Spawn: it’s Spawn and a couple different looks, a couple different characters, and then also some Call of Duty characters with “jobs of Spawn’s “cosplay paint job on them.”
Keith Davidthe voice actor from Spawn: The Animated Series, will also return to voice the character, which is awesome!
