The PREY director talks about the awesome PREDATOR 2 Easter Egg and why it was so important to the setting

Prey it was a fantastic entry into the Predator franchise, and it told the kind of Predator story that I’ve actually always been interested in. That story was set hundreds of years before the first Predator film and follows a Comanche warrior who ends up protecting his tribe from a Predator that comes to Earth. trying to hunt humans for sport.

WELL, Prey had an interesting little connection with Predator 2. In the movie, Amber HalftoneNaru helps Bennett TaylorHe is Raffaello Adolini, a translator hired by fur trappers. To thank Naru, he gives her a flintlock pistol and teaches her how to use it. That gun is the same 1715 pistol first seen in the 1990s Predator 2.

Many fans have noticed this, but the big question is: how did the gun end up in the hands of the Predator? Predator 2? Well, chances are we’ll find out as the story continues in the sequels that follow. Director Dan Trachtenberg recently talked about the Easter egg in an interview with CB, and explained that the gun was an important component of Preyit’s the setting, and it almost got cut from the movie:

“I was imagining the movie and I had all the elements, and what I was looking for was to set it as soon as possible. I really wanted to be as far away from a ‘Western’ as possible. I wasn’t sure where exactly to go. And then I realized, ‘The gun ! The gun from Predator 2! There’s a date on it!” And I quickly ran and looked up and thought, ‘wait, what was that again? What was that again?’ And it was like 1715. I thought, okay, that’s our date. That’s when we go around that gun, kind of lock it in place.”

It almost seems like the gun was the cornerstone of the film! He went on to talk about the editing process and why it was almost cut, saying:

“Every time someone in the movie didn’t know the reference and in the editorial said, ‘oh, maybe we should lose it. That would let us do X, Y or Z, or maybe it’s getting in the way and we should focus on whatever.’ And then I’d say, ‘You’re right, but the gun means…(I’m) like ‘oh wait, what is that?’ I’m like, ‘It’s the end of Predator 2.’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, oh, that’s nice. You gotta keep it. Then you gotta keep it.’ Whenever someone was pressured to lose it because they didn’t know what it meant. And we found a way, like you said, to incorporate it. So it’s not really in the way, you don’t really need to know it, but when you do, it you do. And it’s beautiful.”

That’s a nice reference! It was also extremely important to the story Trachtenberg wanted to tell. The gun is what brought the entire setting of the film to life! I love.
