Marvel Comics and its imprint 20th Century Studios have announced that they are developing a Planet of the Apes prequel series titled Beware the Planet of the Apes. This will be a four-issue limited series set before the events of the original Planet of the Apes film.
The comic will also have a style inspired by the iconic 1968 simian sci-fi film and the story will explore the origins of the primitive human woman called Nova (Linda Harrison). The synopsis reads:
In the Forbidden Zone! In a hostile world ruled by aggressive gorillas, scientists Cornelius and Zira are the only living apes who see the value of the dumb and dim-witted human race, but even they know that human capabilities have serious limits. So when their nephew Lucius disappears, it is with great trepidation that they turn to a human ally, a young woman who will one day earn the nickname “Nova.”
The comic comes from the writer Marc Guggenheim (X-Men: Days of Future Past – Doomsday, Star Wars: Han Solo and Chewbacca) and artist Álvaro Lopez (Captain Marvel, Ka-Zar Lord of the Savage Land). Guggenheim said in a statement:
“I have been entertained and intrigued by Planet of the Apes ever since I received a Doctor Zaius Mego doll as a birthday present, and my local television station broadcast the original pentalogy every afternoon for a week in the summer. In many ways, the Monkeys is one of the OG franchises, full of mystery, charming characters, and some very unusual surprises.
“This is the spirit I’m working to evoke with Beware of the Planet of the Apes. I’m particularly excited that we’ll be reusing some of the [writer] Doug Moench, [artist] George Tuska, e [artist] Alfredo Alcala’s original Marvel work on Adventures on the Planet of the Apes as part of our storytelling.” Moench wrote Marvel’s 1970s color comic adaptations of the Tuska and Alcala illustrated film series, as well as new original Apes stories first published in 1974.
Marvel also revealed the Beware the Planet of the Apes Cover number 1 by Taurin Clarke (Black Panther, Marvel’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2). Beware the Planet of the Apes #1 will go on sale January 3, 2024.
