SUICIDE SQUAD director once again regrets Joker’s ‘damaged’ tattoo – ‘Not all ideas are good’

While disgruntled DC trolls continue to haunt the director David Ayer Above Suicide squad on social media, Ayer continues to respond and shares her thoughts on their critiques. In this most recent post, the director once again shares his regret about the face tattoos Jared Leto’s Joker, especially the “damaged” tattoo.

In response to a fan, Ayer said, “I own the tattoo idea 100%. It was my choice. The original idea is that it would say “Blessed” and not “Bad”. Now, having said that, I regret that decision. It has created acrimony and division. Not all ideas are good. And I’ll just stand in the corner here while the internet slaps me for this post.

At least he can have a sense of humor about how fans keep slapping him. Talking earlier about what the ‘Damaged’ tattoo was supposed to mean, Ayer explained: ‘It was Joker trolling Batman after he punched his teeth in. It’s the one aesthetic choice I wish I hadn’t made. I smoke for this.

In another explanation, the director said, “Joker killed Robin and Batman basically knocks his teeth out and puts him in Arkham Asylum. It is in the asylum where Joker allegedly made the “damaged” tattoo as a message to Batman saying, “You have damaged me.” I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

Ayer has previously spoken about his original cut of Suicide squad and how it’s so much better than the version the studio butchered and released in theaters. One thing he has said in the past is that the original version of the film was “torn to pieces” and some of the “terrifying” scenes of Jared Leto as the Joker were cut from the film.

Speaking previously of the film, Ayer said, “My cut would be easy to complete. That would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a movie that got the Edward scissor hands treatment. The film I made has never been seen.

The original cut of the film included “a lot more Joker, including a big fight with him in the subway.” It was also explained that the beginning of the film “wasn’t edited like a music video, as all the flashbacks happened in chronological order”. One of the most important aspects of his original cut was that there was “a very different and clear tone to the relationship between the Joker and Harley, which actually fits better with the opening of Birds of prey.”

Have any other thoughts on Ayer’s Suicide squad?
