Quentin Tarantino was again in the spotlight and again because of his sharp statements.
This time John Houston, one of the most important directors of Hollywood, the author of dozens of recognized hits and the owner of two Oscars, fell under the distribution.
Usually Tarantino does not bother on the praise of his idols of Sergio Leone, inspired by Brian de Palma, calls his teachers Jean-Pierre Melville and Martin Scorsese. But in the case of Houston, the director of the “criminal reading” fans surprised with frankness.
“I don’t really like Houston, although I really like the” honor of the sight “, he told Bertran Tavernier. “To be honest, I have little respect for my career that seems so chaotic. If I can’t trust the director, I can’t respect his work. And I don’t trust Houston – he has too many weak films.”
Houston made real cult films: “Maltese Falcon”, “Treasures of Sierra-Madra”, “Reef Largo”, “African Queen”, “Iguana Night”, “The man who wanted to become a king” and dozens of paintings that formed the face of the American cinema. But this is not enough for Tarantino. He believes that closer to the end of his life, Houston has lost interest in the profession.
“His life was great. But he could be a genius. And instead he arranged poker parties, at the end of the country in Ireland … he was more interested in hunting an elephant or winning cards than making films. Without insults,” Tarantino added.

The only exceptions he is ready to admit are the ‘honor of the Oski family’ and ‘Reef Largo’. But here compliments with subtext sound. He called “Reef Largo” “Pure Entertainment”:
“This is a deep movie? No. funny? Yes. Give me an Italian gangster film of the 70s, add Barbara Rush and I will be very happy! But I don’t call him a great movie.”
Short about John Houstona:
- The director, screenwriter and actor, worked for almost 50 years.
- 14 nominations for Oscar, 2 victories; 9 nominations for the Golden Globe, 3 wins.
- More than 40 full films, many of which have become a classic from Hollywood.
