The first footage of the highly anticipated Marvel Animation series X-Men ’97 recently premiered at Comic-Con. This show has been in development for two years so far and now fans have finally seen some footage!
The series begins with Magneto and the X-Men after Professor X departs for Shi’ar space in the original show’s series finale. The series brings back the original voice cast included Cal Dodd (Glutton), Lenore Zann (rascal), George Buzza (Beast), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), Chris Potter (gambit), Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler), e Christopher Britton (Sinister Minister).
The official synopsis reads: “Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto arrives and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister arrives to try and end the X-Men once and for all.”
Head writer and producer Beau De Mayo he explained that the animation clips were unfinished and the intention was to give executives a preview of what to expect from the show in terms of tone. Thanks to The Popverse, we have a description of the footage that was shown. It was a Comic-Con exclusive, so don’t expect it to appear online any time soon.
The sequence was part of a larger narrative, as Cyclops and Storm interrogated Henry Gyrich about what appeared to be the shooting of Charles Xavier. (It was unclear whether Xavier was still alive due to the attempt on his life.) Gyrich was unrepentant for his actions, suggesting that humanity must fight back or be eradicated by mutants, but the bravado was futile – after attempting to defeat Cyclops, the latter simply asked, “Have you met my wife?” before audiences saw Jean Gray using the Cerebro helmet, she entered Gyrich’s mind… where something happened that took her out of control, so that she ended up in a red hellish dreamscape, interrupted by the apparition of a giant robotic head announcing: “I am death. I am Master Mold.
The action then shifted to the Blackbird, as the X-Men made their way to the Sahara desert, where they believed to find both Master Mold and his creator, Bolivar Trask – and they were probably right, as they were immediately attacked by a Sentinel which destroyed their craft and sent them crashing to the ground. Sure, they’re the X-Men, so they survived (not least because Morph transformed into Angel, complete with his ’90s metal wings), with the teaser ending with a humorous sequence where Cyclops uses his optic beams to slow his fall until he lands safely, before staring at the camera and saying, “Me, my X-Men.”
DeMayo shared that work on the series is “deep in season one” and that they are “writing season two.” The first season is expected to debut on Disney+ in late 2023.
