Yes, I know spectacular isn’t really a real word, but Netflix used it in this trailer for its upcoming animated film The Monkey King in a playful way, so I thought…why not!
The Monkey King is a martial arts fantasy adventure film inspired by an epic Chinese legend. The film is described as an action-packed family comedy that follows “a rebellious and charismatic Monkey and his magical Fighting Staff on an epic quest for victory over 100 demons, an eccentric Dragon King and Monkey’s greatest enemy: his own ego! Along the way, a young village girl challenges her self-centered attitude and shows him that even the smallest pebble can have a big effect on the world.
The movie looks fun, but it also looks very similar to the DreamWorks one Kung Fu Panda franchise. The main character’s journey and story, however, are very different.
The film was directed by Antonio Stacchi (The Boxtrolls, Open Season), and recites Jimmy O. Yang with Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Nan Li, Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, Ron Yuan, Hoon Lee, bdwong, Andrew Kishino, Sophia Wu and more.
The film will be released on Netflix on August 18.
