Hayley Atwell opens up about her frustration with playing Captain Carter in DOCTOR STRANGE 2

It was really cool to see Hayley Atwell in action as Captain Carter Sam Raimi’S Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it was short-lived as the character was killed too easily. I would have loved to see a Captain Carter movie with Atwell leading the charge, and I guess that’s still possible due to the multiverse, but Carter’s death was still very frustrating for the actress.

During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Atwell spoke about the appearance and quick disappearance of Captain Carter in the Doctor Strange sequel, saying:

“[Her death] it was not my choice! When [Captain Carter] she was like, ‘I could do this all day’ and then followed by her being immediately cut in half by a Frisbee. And the audience was like, “He can’t do this all day.” Apparently you can’t, therefore, egg in the face.’ This doesn’t serve Peggy very well.

He went on to talk about his time working on animation at Marvel What if…? series and how he had a much better experience playing Captain Carter:

“I felt like I had so much more to do in What If…? animation series. I mean, any actor will tell you, being able to walk into a booth actually in your pajamas and do an animation is a lot of fun because you’re focused on the voice as an instrument and your main performance tool… It felt like a frustrating moment in Strange.

Peggy Carter is a fan favorite from Marvel and we all love Atwell in the role. It’s interesting that the studios haven’t toyed with her again in the MCU. At least we have the What if…? spectacle and the hope that it returns at some point across the multiverse. She’s such a fun and interesting character and Marvel has just scratched the surface with her.

Atwell had previously explained, “It definitely wasn’t, you know, the trajectory that I see for Peggy. I definitely wish she had more to do.” As for Peggy’s return, Atwell understands that she’s out of her control, saying, “It depends on what Marvel and the audience want,” he continued.

“I’m a keeper of her. Compared to the rest of my career and everything I’ve done or my stage work and doing Mission: Impossible now and all the diversity of roles I’ve played, and the diversity that I get to explore, and being able to play more complex roles and villains and a lot of different things – she’s not mine anymore. She lives in the world of people who have taken her to their hearts. And it’s beautiful. But it’s kind of like: yeah, you can’t control the impact that a particular role has on the rest of the world”.

Would you like to see more Peggy Carter / Captain Carter in the MCU in the future?
