This week, negotiations between Hollywood studios and the actors they employ came to a head, resulting in an actors’ strike. They come two and a half months after the Hollywood writers’ strike which began on May 2.
In a report from The Verge, we learned this
Duncan Crabtree-Irelandthe chief negotiator of SAG-AFTRA, has revealed a proposal from the Hollywood studios that seems to come out of an episode of Black Mirror.
In a statement about the strike via Deadline, the Alliance of Film and Television Producers (AMPTP) said its proposal included “a breakthrough AI proposal that protects the digital likenesses of actors for SAG-AFTRA members.”
When asked about the proposal at the press conference, Crabtree-Ireland said “this ‘groundbreaking’ AI proposal that they gave us yesterday, they proposed that our background artists should be able to be scanned, get paid one day and their companies should own that scan, their image, their likeness and they should be able to use it for the rest of eternity on any project they want, without consent and without compensation. So if you think this is a revolutionary proposition, you I suggest you think again.”
The use of generative AI has been a major sticking point in the negotiations between the two sides (it is also a major issue behind the writers’ strike), and in his opening statement of the press conference, SAG-AFTRA chair Fran Drescher he said, “If we don’t stand up right now, we’re all going to be in trouble, we’re all going to be in danger of being replaced by machines.”
The SAG-AFTRA strike has begun and we will keep you updated as it develops.
