Brad Pitt shares details about his Formula 1 racing film and Javier Bardem joins the cast

Top Gun: nonconformist director Joseph Kosinsky AND Brad Pitt have collaborated on a Formula 1 racing film that will be unlike any racing film we have seen before.

In the film, Pitt plays a seven-time world champion Formula 1 driver who comes out of retirement to race again and also to mentor a promising rookie. The actor will also be driving a real race car in a real race for the film.

Thanks to Pitt, we have some new details to share with you about the true story on which the film is based. Speaking to Sky Sports, the actor shared the details and revealed it Javier Bardem he also stars in the film. He said:

“The atmosphere is amazing, being a part of it and telling our story. The [F1] teams have opened their doors to us. I play a guy who ran in the 90s who has a terrible accident and disappears, to race in other disciplines. His friend, played by Javier Bardem, the owner of the team, contacts him. They’re last on the grid, they haven’t scored a point. But they have a young phenom, played by Damson Idris, and they bring me in like some kind of Hail Mary. You’ve never seen speed, you’ve never seen G-force like this, the footage is really, really exciting.”

When previously discussing how they will shoot this film, it was explained: “They spent 18 months taking what they learned about Top Gun Maverick to develop the smallest mobile 6k camera ever designed to take the viewer into the cockpit. A cockpit where they will actually drive their stars. Right. Brad Pitt driving an F1 car from Silverstone onwards. The car was designed by Mercedes and is already being tested (you may have seen a video online). As well as their actors, in sim and in real life. Lewis Hamilton is in daily communication and advises on plot and script to ensure it is the most accurate racing film ever made.”

The filmmaking team is also said to be “determined to make the most accurate and impressive racing film anyone has ever seen.” Tom Cruise even offered to do some extra driving if they needed him.

Speaking earlier about the film, Kosinski said it’s “coming fast” and explained that they’re shooting it using the techniques they learned while making it. Top Gun: nonconformist. He said: “He IS fascinating. Can’t wait to show people behind the scenes. We’ll be driving around the track in real cars and trying to apply everything I’ve learned in Top Gun to Formula One. It will be funny.”

He also discussed the way the film was shot, saying, “Certainly seeing people react to a film as authentically framed and captured as Top Gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by audiences.”

He went on to talk about applying this concept to his next film, saying, “It’s almost funny to me to see people so in love with real photography. Young people hardly saw much of it. They are so used to CGI [computer-generated images] being a great movie tool that when you shoot something for real, it feels groundbreaking. That’s exactly the approach for Formula 1… shoot the real races and real cars and capture them. It will be a huge but exciting challenge for me.”

The film project is in development for Apple, but there are plans to release it theatrically. I’m curious to see how this movie ends!
