I have here an incredibly interesting video to watch that offers a behind the scenes look at some of the VFX work that has been created to bring John Wick: Chapter 4 to life. The crazy thing is that the scene where the video cuts out… you didn’t even know that most of it was visual effects.
The scene involves that crazy action scene set at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. While all of the stunts to create this scene were real, the entire Paris setting was digital! It’s pretty amazing to see exactly how they did it!
The video was shared by Rodeo FX in Montreal who created the scene for the film. Speaking about the scene, Rodeo’s Javier Rocas said:
“The rendering was very complex. It was 113 takes. It was almost like making an animated short film in 4K, with so many different elements. We had to render two different lighting scenarios for the artists to combine. So, we had Paris, which is was always fully rendered. And then the “lights” of Berlin, to make sure that those lights they used in the Berlin location also reflected on the CG cars. Also, the other way around, on the stunt cars, we were also the lights of our CG Paris on them.”
Roca went on to explain that due to the various exchanges between the venues, the VFX ensured that continuity remained tight between shots:
“The idea was that everything had to live under the same kind of lighting conditions. Headlights, but especially taillights and brake lights, are a huge part of a car’s design, so we had to replicate, or at least reinvent , these lights to be modern, LED vs halogen, accounting for color temperature depending on new vs old cars, have the right exposure whilst still offering lig/comp flexibility to adjust them…and not to mention the gauges.
