It was really cool to see Michael Keaton back in action as Batman The flash movie. I never thought I’d see him in that role again! So, that was a nice surprise! Danny DeVito he’s also set to return to his role as Penguin in DC’s cinematic multiverse if the opportunity presents itself. During a recent interview with SFX magazine, DeVito was asked if he would return to play The Penguin, and he said:
“I would definitely consider doing that, yeah. Batman Returns was a great part, it was operatic. You could just pull all the stops out. There were so many motivating things, so many things stirring inside him Being the strange man out – the strange bird out – brought the character out of me. It was an exciting experience for me because I felt it was a unique opportunity to play Oswald Cobblepot with Tim’s vision and design Tim is a genius to me.”
While it would be fun to see DeVito as the Penguin again, I don’t think it would be as wonderfully grotesque as Tim Burton’s version of the character. The actor then got up in the middle of the interview to grab an old prop from the Batman returns… its black and white patterned rotating umbrella.
“You know what that is? That’s the original Penguin umbrella. Ladies and gentlemen, watch his mind blown… Yes, it’s here. It’s here! It’s mine! What? Do you have a problem with that?”
That would have been a great thing to see! What a great interview that must have been! DeVito previously shared that he would like to reprise the role in a Batman movie one day if Burton decides to return to the franchise. He said:
“I feel like it’s not out of the question that the Penguin will come back one day, but it’s all up to Tim, whether or not Tim wants to. I’d say it could be in the cards because we’re not dead yet (laughs). We could do a continuation of what we had in the past because it was such a brilliant film. I was given this opportunity and I’m so grateful and would love to see it again? Why not! It was a really great moment in time for me.”
“There’s a little Oswald in me. And then there’s Danny. I’m not a closed book, I’m practically an open book.”
DeVito is so attached to the character that he wrote a Penguin story for DC Comics a couple of years ago! DeVito will soon be seen in Disney Haunted house. He plays Bruce, a college professor who is “very interested in the occult” and called to offer his expertise.
