Looks like Netflix has Zack Snyder the ability to build your own epic sci-fi fantasy universe, and it all starts with his upcoming two-part film rebel moon. I’ve been really curious about this movie because it’s based on a Star Wars presentation he made to Lucasfilm shortly after they were purchased by Disney.
It actually seems as though things have worked out better for Snyder than things have worked out with Lucasfilm. Now Snyder can tell the exact story he wants to tell, and there are endless plans to go beyond these first two films and it was Netflix that started all of this. Synder explained in an interview with Empire:
“When I pitched it to Netflix, scale was one thing they wanted. They said, ‘Well, how big could it be? How many movies?’ That made me go, “Okay, if we really do this, we can sink our teeth pretty deep into this.” We can’t really hit rock bottom.’”
Snyder has also been revealed to have written a 450-page Bible for Rebel Moon, which details “all sorts of lore and backstories related to the evil Imperium.” It has an expansive timeline that extends well before and after the story of the two upcoming films.
The director then revealed that he already has plans for a TV series that would explore the story of the villain of the saga, Fra Taxhe is Balisario. Then there’s also a third film that he’s working on that would actually use the wayward moon in the story because it’s not part of those first two films. He said:
“The Rebel Moon is not the moon they are on. The title was conceptual, but there is a planet called Vanna, and Vanna is the wayward moon. He’s not even in a take of this movie!
The story is set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They send a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them make a stand against the Tyrant.
It will be interesting to see how big this franchise gets. I’m pretty confident that the first two movies will be hits for Netflix and they’ll want to continue expanding the universe.
The film is the protagonist Sophia Botella, Charlie Hunnam, Doona Bae, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huismann, Anthony Hopkins, AND Alfonso Herrera.
Rebel Moon Part 1 will arrive on Netflix on December 22nd. Each of the two films will have a family version and an R-rated version.
