When Charlie CoxDaredevil made his return to the MCU in She-Hulk: Advocate, received mixed reactions from fans. This version of the character was different from the one in the Netflix series and had a much lighter tone. One person who was not happy with how Daredevil was portrayed in the series was the stuntman for the series Chris Brewer, who criticized it for turning Daredevil into a cartoon. In a recent episode of Izuko unscriptedHe said:

“I think, now that the MCU has taken over the character, I think they’re really hurting him. If you look at She-Hulk, they’ve made Daredevil into a cartoon. It’s all animated and it looks bad.”

Brewster then went on to compare the work done with the character in the Netflix series and points out that the Netflix series was pretty much entirely practical with regards to using CGI and digital doubles in She-Hulk:

“You know, I love CG to enhance real movement, but if you don’t have any real movement, it just becomes cartoonish. It’s just CG and it has no weight, and what has always made the action look so good on Daredevil is was visceral You felt what Charlie felt, between his performance and being there, in the action.

Brewster was actually one of the main characters behind Daredevil’s incredibly insane fight sequences on Netflix shows, which is something She-Hulk teased. Brewer went on to say:

“And everything you saw, we really did. We had to put someone on a wire, we needed something to improve the movement. But it wasn’t a cartoon. It was live-action. And you can never match the energy than live action. So, I think She-Hulk was a huge step back in terms of movement and action.”

You can’t really argue with that, but unfortunately, CGI fight sequences are what Marvel is all about. Hopefully with the imminent Daredevil: Born Again series, Marvel goes back to the tone of the original series and actually incorporates some heavy hands-on fight sequences.

When previously speaking about the tone of the series, he said he thinks it will be like an old-school procedural:

“I’m fascinated to find out why they chose to do 18. I imagine there will be an element similar to the old school procedural spectacle. Not necessarily the case of the week, but something where we really dive into attorney Matt Murdock and see what his life is like. If it’s done right and really gets its hands dirty with that world… I think there’s something very interesting about that.”

Cox went on to say that he believes the new show will be dark but not gory, saying:

“My opinion is that this character works best when it’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience. My gut is that it will be dark on Disney+ but it probably won’t be as gory. i would say [people hoping the Disney+ show copies the Netflix show], we did. Let’s take the stuff that actually worked, but can we scale up? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?

The series was written and executive produced by Secret business creators Matthew Corman AND Chris Ord. The 18 episode season of Daredevil: Born Again is expected to premiere in 2024.
