Apple TV+ has released a full trailer for Martin Scorseseit’s an amazing looking film The flower moon killers, which tells the dark and tragic story of greed and murder in America’s heartland. This movie looks amazing and is based on David Grannthe book of, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. The film is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-rich Osage Nation, a series of brutal crimes that became known as the Reign of Terror.
Leonardo Dicaprio he stars in the film as Ernest Burkhart, and is joined by Lily Glastone as Mollie Burkhart, an Osage married to Ernest, granddaughter of a powerful local rancher, played by Robert DeNiro. Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) AND Jesse Plemon (Horn) also star in the film. The synopsis reads:
In the late nineteenth century, the Osage Indians were driven onto a supposedly worthless stretch of land in northeastern Oklahoma. But their turf turned out to be atop one of the largest oil fields in the United States; to get that oil, prospectors had to pay the tribe rents and royalties. By the 1920s, Osage Nation members had become the wealthiest people per capita in the world. And then the Osage began to die under mysterious circumstances.
In a recent interview with Empire Gladstone spoke about the perception of the film as a “Martin Scorsese western” and how it is actually closer to a tragedy.
“A lot of people really want to call this ‘Martin Scorsese Western,'” Gladstone said before clarifying that it’s actually “a great American tragedy… With Native Americans and Westerns, we’re so dehumanized it almost feels like we’re part of the landscape – instead of humans telling a story.
The actress then spoke about her experience growing up on a reservation and how familiar the story of the film was to her:
“Having grown up on my reservation in Montana, in the American West and Indian country, it was very familiar to see this type of awkward, over-the-top cowboy character fall in love with a truly self-possessed Native woman. It’s just such a familiar dynamic. And that was backed up by a lot of community stories that we had heard.
When previously talking about the film, screenwriter Eric Rot she shared, “This was a unique story that I knew nothing about. It showed my ignorance. I thought, “That’s amazing, it could be a western.” Marty has never done a western. It’s the first time you’ll see a street scene where there are 90% Indigenous Native Americans and 1 or 2% Caucasians.”
He also explained that this movie is “nothing we’ve ever seen” and that it will be “one for the ages,” saying, “I know Marty is trying to make a movie that’s probably the last Western that would be made like this , and yet, with this incredible social document underneath, and the violence and the environment. I think it’s going to be something we’ve never seen, in a way. And so this is, to me, one for the ages.
The film will have a limited theatrical release on October 6, 2023, with a wide theatrical release following on October 20, 2023. Watch the trailer and tell us what you think.
