James Mangold says an X-23 movie was planned but scrapped by Disney

James Mangold’S Logano it was a perfect ending to Hugh Jackmanit’s Wolverine. That movie might be one of the best comic book movies ever made. Yes, Jackman is returning to reprise his role in Deadpool 3but that movie won’t interfere with the story Logan is telling.

One of Logan’s bright spots was Daphne Keen, who assumed the role of X-23. She was amazing in that movie and I would have loved to see a spin-off that continued her story about her. She deserved a movie of her own! According to Mangold, it was actually planned, but after Disney bought Fox, they scrapped it.

While a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Mangold confirmed plans for the film, but never got around to writing a script. He said:

“I never had a script. I’ve started working on a story, but I don’t consider it a universe. I loved the character. I thought Daphne [Keen] she is such an incredibly dazzling actress. I mean, I thought… you talk about movie bets, the amount of weight we put on an 11-year-old girl in that movie.

It was because of Keen’s performance and fan response that made him want to make a spin-off film. He went on to say:

“I mean, it happened. “Paper Moon” with Tatum O’Neal or “The Exorcist”. There are movies where the little girl’s performance shocks everyone to the depths of her but she was so miraculous in that movie and fierce. And I think people have responded on so many levels, even people with just difficult kids acknowledge Logan’s predicament trying to deal with her. But I was really curious how it would work.

Unfortunately, we’ll never see her story explored further, which is a shame. I think a movie based on her character would have been a big hit! Creator of the X-23 Craig Kyle he previously shared his thoughts on where the story should go saying:

“We know that babies have been created and tested. I’d love to see some of the stories we’ve told [in the comics], see as much as possible of how she came to be, but then really get into the stories of what she was forced to do and commit. You said you killed people. You said bad people. Most of who X-23 and Laura have killed in the comics were bad people, but she has killed some children. You killed an entire press corps. I think there is something powerful about watching her go through those horrors with no say in it and no ability not to take those actions.

“One story I’ve always wanted to tell was that once she’s free and once she’s been through what she’s been through, the only way she can have any hope for a future is to go back and track down the lives that are left and who have been harmed by the actions she was forced to commit. You have set her on this journey of redemption. She confronts the families who have lost fathers. The orphans, all who have been touched by her horrific deeds. And she can face them one by one and face everyone affected by them. from the murders she was forced to commit, if she can make it to the end of that road without being killed by those who remain, there is something on the other side. that would be really transformative for the character.”

Would you have liked to see an X-23 movie with Keen back in the role? It could still be done! Marvel should just do it.
