BLUE BEETLE director explains he has plans for a full trilogy

The director of Blue Beetle, Angelo Manuel Soto, has big plans for the franchise that he hopes to make. The upcoming film is the first in a planned trilogy, but the next two films have not been greenlit by DC Studios at this time.

Soto is fully committed to telling more stories with Jaime Reyes aka Blue Beetle. He and the creative team are proud of what they’ve accomplished with this first film, but if fans want to continue telling stories with these characters, fans need to show up to see the film. During an interview with Total Film, Soto teased his big plan by saying:

“Our first film, the way we wanted to make it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to make at least two more, and taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first film to be basically the first act of a saga.

“We’re part of the universe, we’re part of the world, we’re part of the plans they created for future installments of the DCU. But we’re not tied to every movie from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where the superheroes. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or a certain alliance, or certain things from the past determine where our movie is going.”

James Gunn has already confirmed that Blue Beetle is the “first DCU character.” Then In an earlier interview with the star of the film Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), said he ultimately wants to see the character dragged into “Justice League crap”.

“If we get a movie or a trilogy and we fucking fold it into Justice League crap, we’re ready for all nine. For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked this movie’s ass. It just depends on the numbers.”

It depends on the numbers and after Black Adam AND The flash the numbers were lower than expected at the box office, not sure Blue Beetle he will cut it. But, we’ll see.

The film’s story centers on Jaime Reyes, the alter ego of the Blue Beetle, a vigilante who has a beetle grafted onto his spine that gives him enormous powers and the ability to emit blue energy. You can see the transformation happen in the trailer, and it’s like family-friendly body horror. Here is the synopsis:

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find home isn’t quite the way he left it. As he tries to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Beetle. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with incredible armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero BLUE BEETLE.

The Blue Beetle movie is directed by Angelo Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The film is also the protagonist Bruna Marchezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillen; AND Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.

The film will only be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
