Director Oliver Stone (Natural Born Killers, Platoon, JKF) is not a fan of John Wick: Chapter 4. In fact, she hated the movie! While the film was met with rave reviews from critics and audiences thoroughly enjoyed the wacky action flick, Stone slammed it in a recent interview with Variety as “disgusting beyond belief.” Here’s what he said:
“I saw John Wick 4 on the plane. Let’s talk volume. I think the movie is disgusting beyond belief. Disgusting. I don’t know what people are thinking. Maybe I was watching GI Joe when I was a kid. But [Keanu Reeves] kills, what, three, four hundred people in the fucking movie. And as a combat veteran, I have to tell you, none of them are believable. I realize it’s a movie, but it’s become more of a video game than a movie.”
He went on to explain that he ended up bored, saying:
“He’s lost touch with reality. The audience maybe likes the video game. But I’m bored. How many cars can crash? How many stunts can you do? What is the difference between Fast and Furious and some other movies? It’s just one thing after another. Whether it’s a superhuman Marvel character or just a human like John Wick, it makes no difference. It’s not believable.
The directors have repeatedly said that the story of John Wick it’s 100% pure fantasy and they try to establish that, but I guess some people don’t like that kind of movie. It’s a super fun movie filled with crazy, over-the-top action that audiences enjoy watching! Too bad Stone didn’t like it. But he watched it on a plane without the energy of the audience around him.
