Warner Bros. is developing a new film series based on JRRTolkien’S The Lord of the Rings. These films will expand the films that Peter Jackson made and will explore more of the Middle-earth universe.
The studio really wants Peter Jackson to get back into the franchise and help them in their endeavors, maybe even direct some of the new movies. The studio has been in contact with him, and in a recent report it was revealed that WB CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy actually flew to New Zealand “to re-establish the studio’s connection with the franchise’s original director.”
Traveling out there certainly shows that they’re willing to put in the effort to bring him back aboard the fantasy franchise. In a statement previously released on the new Lord of the Rings projects, Jackson, Fran Walsch AND Philippa Boyens he said, “Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way. We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
There’s no word yet on whether Jackson is officially signed on to anything, but if not, I’m guessing they’re in ongoing discussions with him about making it happen.
Moreover, they are trying to get Christopher Nolan Backwards! Nolan ended up leaving the studio after it started releasing movies on HBO Max instead of theaters. After he left, he landed at Universal Pictures where he made his most recent film Oppenheimer.
According to the report, the studio wants to “sew the barriers with Nolan” as he is one of the studio’s most successful directors. Regarding Nolan’s return, De Luca said: “We hope to have Nolan back. I think there is a world.
However, it won’t be easy to get him back from Universal Pictures. Sources inside the studio state that “the director has received a seven-figure royalty check from Warner Bros. for the past eight months. The payment was tied to his 2020 film Principle.
A source says “De Luca, Abdy and Zaslav all agreed he was owed the bonus in good faith. There were no strings attached, according to insiders, but the studio was partly motivated to repair that fractured relationship. Nolan has since returned to The WB for post-production work done on Oppenheimer.
Jackson and Nolan are two incredibly talented filmmakers, and it makes sense that the studio wants them back! I hope Jackson comes back for the Lord of the Rings projects. As for Nolan, as long as he keeps directing movies, he doesn’t really care where he’s shooting them.
