It’s hard enough to find work in the film industry, especially for writers, actors and directors. But, even if you are lucky enough to enter and make a living working in the industry, you will still face challenges and a lot of rejections.

Even a director likes it Guillermo del Toro, someone who makes great movies and won an Oscar for best director, still has trouble getting his movie projects done! During a recent panel at the Annecy animation festival, the director revealed that he still gets turned down regularly when he makes his presentations at the studios!

After he finished talking about his love for animation and his desire to only make animated films in the future, he warned aspiring filmmakers of the rejection they face and how the film industry “is geared towards grinding shit and destroy your art”. She went on to say:

“They still tell me no. In the last two months they said no to five of my projects. So it doesn’t go away. Making movies is eating a shit sandwich. There’s always shit, just sometimes you get a little more bread with yours. The productivity rate against your efforts will remain frustratingly difficult and frustratingly long. And you will always meet assholes. But trust the stories you want to tell and wait for someone to buy them.”

This is definitely a reality check for many aspiring filmmakers. Sometimes people are lucky and talented enough to take a break, but as del Toro says, grinding in the film industry can be incredibly frustrating and difficult for even seasoned filmmakers!

Hollywood is a crazy place. One of the reasons it’s so difficult to get film projects done, especially at the major studios, is because they’re focused on big existing IPs, sequels, remakes, and reboots. These are all safe bets. One thing you need to remember is that Hollywood isn’t run by creative people, it’s run by accountants.
