A new epic Lord of the Rings MMO game is in the works at Amazon Games

Amazon is partnering with Middle-earth Enterprises for a massive new multiplayer online (MMO) video game based on JRRTolkienit is a fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings.

The untitled game will be “an open-world MMO adventure in a persistent world set in Middle-earth, featuring the beloved stories of The Hobbit AND The Lord of the Rings Literary Trilogy”. The game is in the early stages of development, led by Amazon Games Orange County, the studio behind the open-world MMO game from Amazon Games New world.

Vice President of Amazon Games Christopher Hartmann said in a statement, “We are committed to bringing gamers high-quality games, both through original IPs and long-loved ones like The Lord of the Rings. This is Amazon’s second attempt to produce a Lord of the Rings MMORPG game. The first time was in 2019, it was set in “a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings”, and was developed by Leyou Technologies. The project was dropped, though after China’s Tencent acquired Leyou and Amazon and Tencent failed to come to terms on a new deal for the game.

Amazon Games will publish the game globally for PC and consoles, but hasn’t announced an expected release date. I’m curious to see how this game ends, but I hope it turns out to be something truly epic.
