Playing your favorite tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) online is a must for some gaming groups. The trick is determining the tools you will be using. One of the tools that the vast majority of players would agree is necessary is a virtual table (VTT). There are already some popular options like Roll20 and Fantasy motifs. A new player is arriving even if called Kingdom architect and I think it shows some real promise.

Kingdom architect recently launched a Kickstarter that was fully funded within 48 hours. This VTT aims to provide an easy to use and fully customizable experience (including the user interface) for players. At first glance it doesn’t seem to be too special, but there is one aspect that really makes me want to change. The Kickstarter and accompanying video (included below) talks about how you can build a world Kingdom architect easier than other VTT and looks very elegant. In short, you have your map, but then you can click certain UI elements to essentially zoom into smaller sections as you go. It looks so clean and so well implemented.

As for the cost, Kingdom architect will start with a monthly subscription (commitments show about $28 for 3 months). However, there are plans to eventually allow users to purchase materials without the need for a subscription. The subscription will give you access to virtually any content on the platform.

I want to emphasize that at the moment Kingdom architect it’s more designed for fantasy gaming (although it says you can customize it to fit any game out there) like Dungeons & Dragons, but more themes are planned over time, and if the Kickstarter campaign reaches the $75000 goal, a cosmic horror theme will be unlocked. This will add cults for Elder Gods, an insanity system, and more.

If you’re really on the fence, Kingdom architect has made a prototype that you can download and try via Itch.io. You’ll need a Windows PC to run it, though the $50,000 goal is to expand the platforms available. Since this is a prototype, expect bugs, glitches, and missing features. The team still wants feedback and wants you to be brutally honest. What do you think about Kingdom architect? Are interested?
