One of the greatest “almost cast” stories in Hollywood history is that of the actress Molly Ringwald turning down Vivian Ward’s role in the cult classic Pretty Woman. The part famously ended up going to the Oscar winner, Julia Robertswhich ended up getting an Academy Award nomination for playing the hooker with a heart of gold.

Now Ringwald, most famous for her roles in teen films of the 80s Sixteen candles, Pretty in pink AND Breakfast clubshe’s finally talking about why she turned down the part that could have launched her career to another level.
Ringwald said in a recent interview with British media The Guardian:
“Julia Roberts was wonderful, but I didn’t really like the story. Even then, I felt like there was something gross about that.
Pretty Woman tells the story of a prostitute (Roberts) who is hired by a businessman, played by Richard Gere. Vivian then pretended to be her girlfriend for the duration of the business trip, and they end up falling in love with her. Ringwald felt that her role did not suit her. She continued:
“I really didn’t think the darker roles were available to me. The ones I wanted to do, I didn’t get. I was too young for certain roles. I was in this weird in-between stage.
This is why she believes it cost her roles in movies Working girl AND The silence of the lambs, both big hits. Ringwald has continued to work steadily in both film and TV, and has recently appeared in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Riverdale, FeudAND The bear.
