DC’s new bosses, James Gunn AND Peter Safran, launched the opening slate of their upcoming DC Universe films. Among the rollouts is the James Gunn-direct film, Superman: Legacy, which will reboot the Man of Steel franchise. One concern that some people voiced when this news broke to debut, was that it seemed like the other Superman projects handling rumors in recent years seemed to be dead in the water. Namely, the reported Ta-Nehisi Coates-written and JJ Abramsversion produced by Superman.

However, speaking to Gizmodo this weekend, Gunn confirmed that just because his Superman movie is on the way, doesn’t mean one is completely out of the ordinary.
“These two things are totally unrelated. It’s an exciting film. I know Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely enthusiastic about it. So if it comes and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script of, and if the timing is right, it absolutely could happen. This is totally foreign. It would be like an Elseworlds story Joker.”
So while that film isn’t part of DC’s plans, it could still exist in a world of its own. It was previously reported that “Coates is creating a Kal-El in the vein of the original Superman comics and will see the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth. While the story is currently being worked out and many details may change, one option under consideration is for the film to be a 20th century period piece.
Speaking previously about the project, Coates said, “To be invited to the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor. I look forward to contributing significantly to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”
While JJ Abrams said: “There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we are beyond grateful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.
