During a recent interview with Total Film, Ford spoke about playing this iconic role one last time: “This is the last film in the series, and this is the last time I will play the character. I predict it will be the l last time he appeared in a film”.
She went on to talk about how she’s “always wanted to see a character completion” and added, “I wanted to see [Indiana Jones] at a later stage in his life, when he is beyond youthful enthusiasm and ability, and is beleaguered by age and [stifled by academia]. I wanted to see him engaged in another unexpected and unforeseen adventure.”
That adventure is set in 1969 during the space race, with Jones finding himself as “a man out of time” facing Voller, a NASA member and former Nazi involved in the moon landing program, who wants to “rectify the world and make it into a better place as he sees fit.” He is trying to correct the mistakes Hitler made when he was in power with the Dial of Destiney artifact.
The moon landing program “was run by a group of ex-Nazis. How “ex” they are is the question. And it makes Indy turn up his nose. It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed. It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there – it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.
Ford added how happy he was to be in the process of making this film saying, “I had an ambition to make this film for 10 years, and finally there has come a time where we have all committed to it. It has been a joyous time for me I think it’s a rare situation I’m in.
When asked if Ford would be involved in the TV series that was in development on Disney+, the actor said he “won’t be involved in that, if it comes to fruition.” Last we heard was that the series wasn’t moving forward, which is probably for the best.
Ford concluded by saying that he will end his time as Indiana Jones with a bang: “I was able to make amazing films developed by Steven [Spielberg] and George [Lucas] over a period of 40 years, and to end it not with a whimper, but with a bang, has been my greatest ambition for this excursion.”
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opens in theaters on June 30. I’ve included a couple in the images below.
