What happens at night it is described as “the dream story of a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a child”.

It is explained that “the pair check into a cavernous, largely deserted hotel where they meet an enigmatic cast of characters including a feisty singer, a depraved businessman and a charismatic healer. Nothing is quite as it seems in this strange and frozen world. As the couple struggle to reclaim their child, less seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together.

It sounds like an interesting story, and The Times Of London called the novel “a mystery story, even a bit of a thriller, with some backing on the sinister ready-made atmosphere of The Shining.” I like the sound of that description, and that could make for a great movie.

Author Peter Cameron commented, “I couldn’t be more honored or delighted to have my novel optioned by Studiocanal’s Aaron Ensweiler and Shana Eddy. And to have Martin Scorsese and Patrick Marber, two artists whose talents amaze me, re-imagine and recreate What Happens at Night is just amazing.”

Producer Patrick Marber she added, “I’m so thrilled and excited to be working with the legendary Martin Scorsese to bring Peter Cameron’s astonishing and beautiful story to the screen.”

Aaron Ensweiler AND Shana Eddy he said: “Every now and then a project comes along that reminds you why you fell in love with cinema. This is one of those projects. Peter Cameron’s incredibly beautiful novel captured our imagination from the first page. The opportunity to lead the adaptation of him is an honor, and to be able to do so with Martin and Patrick is a first-rate privilege.

There’s no director attached yet, but maybe there’s a chance Scorsese will handle it now that he’s done with The flower moon killers.
