One of the big cinematic announcements made at the Star Wars Celebration over the weekend was that Daisy Ridley was teaming up with Lucasfilm on a new project that would continue the story of Rey Skywalker. This movie came as a surprise considering that Ridley had said he after him quit playing the character The Rise of Skywalker.

The film follows the story of The Rise of Skywalker and will focus on Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order, set in a time when the “Jedi are in disarray.” It’s kinda funny because when the Jedi aren’t in disarray!?
According to Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, this project has been in development for years. She explained in an interview with Yahoo:
“We’ve been working on it [film] for a few years and it all feeds into our overall narrative. So now we’ve gotten to a point where we have a wonderful writer in Steven Knight, he’s come on board and we’ll probably see a script in the next month and a half that we’ve been working on for quite a while. So we’re getting close.”
The film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoybut the fact that Peaky Blinders‘ Stefano Cavaliere writing the script gives me hope for the project. I guess it all depends on whether Kennedy, the executives at Lucasfilm and Disney allow the writer latitude to tell a great story for Rey, or if they cripple him and the story with studio notes.
Originally, Guardians‘S Damon Lindelof AND Justin Britt-Gibson they were attached to write the film, but dropped out of the project after handing in the script.
