Actress and director Maïwenn, whose film Joan of Barry Starring Johnny Depp, who opens next month’s Cannes Film Festival, has been accused of assaulting a journalist during a bizarre encounter at a Paris restaurant in February, several local French news outlets said Friday.
Edwy Plenel, co-founder of the online newspaper media sharefiled a complaint in March, which The figaro“A woman who had earlier been sitting alone at another table… stood up in no time and held [Plenel] angrily through the hair, throws his head back and spits in his face. The woman then “hastily left the restaurant without anyone being able to intervene given the speed of the action”. Restaurant staff reportedly identified her as the manager, whose full name is Maïwenn le Besco but uses her first name.
According to the reports, not a word was spoken during the alleged attack, but the complaint alleges Plenel was “very traumatized by the hatred” he emitted and “totally damaging on a moral and psychological level”.
“The act is unique, but no less violent and in a certain sense traumatic, even if no physical damage was done,” Plenel’s lawyer, Pierre-Emmanuel Blard, reportedly told AFP. “Even for such acts there can be no impunity.”
The journalist apparently said he “personally never had any problems” with Maïwenn, but his newspaper published articles about the rape charges against Luc Besson. Besson is Maïwenn’s ex-husband and father of one of their children.
