Jurassic World Dominion: Universal’s Dino Franchise Storms for 6th Place in Deadline’s 2022 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a break during the pandemic, when theaters were closed for most of 2020-2021 and theatrical titles became more common on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms. Returning from that side, studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monetization they can bring. Not to mention their strength in launching IPs around the world with huge global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top films, it’s not about how much a film costs at the box office. The true story is told as production budgets, P&A, talent royalties and other costs collide with box office and ancillary revenue from VOD to DVD and TV. To get closer to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is recapping our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data from experienced and trusted sources.

THE MOVIE

Jurassic world domination
Universal/Amblin

Jurassic world domination was the first Hollywood studio production in the UK to return to filming following a Covid shutdown in mid-March 2020 – this first shutdown occurring within weeks of filming starting on 25 February this year. Production resumed in July 2020, only to be interrupted again in October due to a Covid outbreak among the crew, but in the end, after 18 months of production and 40,000 Covid tests, it was worth Universal’s sweat in a film , which earned $1. billion worldwide — one of just three 2022 theatrical releases to do so in the past year Top Gun: Maverick And Avatar: The Way of Water. (The film’s theatrical release date was pushed back from June 2021 to June 2022 to ensure it would thrive in a restored global cinema world.) The first jurassic world Director Colin Trevorrow has been brought back to direct this finale, bringing with him the cast of the new franchise, consisting of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Jurassic Park Team composed of Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neil. The last sequel, the one from 2018 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdomunder filmmaker JA Bayona, was deemed too dark by critics with a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and fans with an A-CinemaScore lower than jurassic world71% and A supremacy fared worse with critics at 29% Rotten, but moviegoers returning to theaters for a tentpole summer showed they still love dinosaurs with an A and $376.8 million domestic and $625.1 million US dollars which was spent abroad, including China.

THE BOX SCORE

IT COMES AFTER

Our sources estimate the net production cost at $185 million, which includes $6-8 million in additional Covid studio protocols. Universal’s policy for films grossing more than $50 million in the United States is a 31-day theatrical window before hitting homes on premium VOD. Although Amblin has a payment window with Showtime, supremacy was dropped from that deal and instead streamed both an extended and original portion of NBCUniversal’s Peacock service starting September 2. The $160 million in global streaming/TV dollars includes what the studio paid for itself supremacy through the first part of the Peacock window, followed by another part on Amazon’s Prime Video. Sources include $80 million in contributions from cast, filmmakers and producers (notably Steven Spielberg, here an EP, who has a very rich production deal with Amblin). It’s also important to note that in the wake of Covid and China banning several American films from prioritizing their own domestic fare, supremacy was one of the few Hollywood films to break into this market, grossing $157.5 million. The net profit here is $229.7 million.
