Review: TERMINAL VELOCITY: BOOSTED EDITION takes you back to the summer of 1995

The year is 1995 and Terminal Reality and 3D Realms have released their latest arcade-style air combat game Terminal speed. You can run it on your home computer via DOS or Windows 95 and blast enemies out of the sky. Here’s what the scene might have been like a while back Terminal speed launched for the first time. Recently, Ziggurat Interactive brought the game to modern platforms with Terminal Velocity: Enhanced Edition. This new version of the game is essentially exactly what the game was, just rigged so that it can run properly on modern hardware. This results in smoother gameplay, clear graphics, fast framerate, improved sound, and the addition of achievements and trophies.

Unlike most other flight simulators, Terminal Velocity is all about combat. With low inertia flight mechanics that allow players to easily turn, roll and spin on tricky maps and a simple control layout, they’ll be propelled straight into the action.

To maintain their air superiority, they will have access to an arsenal of weapons and several game-changing upgrades to defeat deadly enemy combatants in the air and on the ground. They will feel the ultimate power of flight as they take to the skies and soar through alien environments and show off their aerial prowess through dozens of narrow tunnels and underground caverns. It’s all about action, speed and destruction!

Ziggurat Interactive was kind enough to provide me with a PC code for Terminal Velocity: Enhanced Edition. You can grab your copy on Nintendo Switch or PC. All thoughts below are my own.

I remember spending time during one summer when I was probably about 10 in my basement playing a game called Descent. It looked very similar to Terminal speed thats why i was so excited when i saw it Terminal speed it was ported to modern hardware. Now that I’ve spent some time playing it, it’s actually very similar. They look similar, sound similar, and they’re both fun.

Terminal Velocity: Enhanced Edition does a good job of preserving a 1995 arcade flying game. This is great for anyone looking to revisit the game. The catch is that it hasn’t really been updated in any way. The graphics support 16:9 high resolution monitors, but that’s about it. Everything is blocky like before with old school blast assets and blocky text. I will say that the game has three different control options: keyboard, mouse and controller. My favorite was the controller followed by the keyboard and then the mouse.

One thing that bugged me was that I was constantly looking for the controls to make sure what they were (old games are notorious for asking for manuals and such) but then some of the buttons like the save button (F2) didn’t seem to work Do something. I’m not sure if it did nothing or there was no confirmation message or what the deal is but it was a bit frustrating.

Other than that though, Terminal Velocity: Enhanced Edition Worked well on my car and seemed to be very true to the original. If you like these old games, I’d say this is a good one. For now, the game looks great. The only thing I wish is more of a remaster, but that wasn’t the goal. Do you remember playing this game in the past?
