Well, according to Rodriguez, that fight scene was shot without a director. The actress revealed this information to Vanity Fair, saying she didn’t need it. She explained:

“I can just tell you – no pun intended, but Charlize is a monster. We shot ours [‘Fast X’] directorless fight sequence. Bro, like, hands off, put the mic down, we nailed it. We were there, no need [a director]let’s do it.”

So why didn’t they have a director on set to shoot the scene? Well, there was a time during production where they didn’t have a director. Justin Lin he began directing the film, but left just days into production due to creative differences. So that scene was filmed between that time and the time they hired The carrier AND Now you see Me director Louis Letterier. The actress added:

“We kept that train running until Louis came along and took over. AND [Charlize] she’s a consummate professional, elbows sharp, her work ethic goes above and beyond.

Well, it looks like they’ve delivered a badass fight sequence without a director that I’m sure fans are going to love. Leterrier previously revealed to Esquire that four days after receiving the call from Universal, he was on set filming the film. He said:

“I read the script four times on the plane, and I said I had ideas, and they said, ‘Great, because the whole third act is changing. Can you rewrite it tonight?’ I was literally not sleeping. I haven’t slept in days.”

“Obviously, this wasn’t going to be set in stone. But I thought, ‘Okay, yeah, I have some ideas’ and started writing. And of course, since the third act was changing, I needed to change the first act. And when you rewrite the third act, and the first act, the second act has to go. So basically I had to rebuild the plane on the fly.

So, it must have been fun for him! Speaking earlier about the film’s ending, Rodriguez shared that fans will be in for a shock.

“I think people are going to be really, really surprised and we’re going to have a lot of jaw dropping by the end of Fast X. Put it this way. He’ll be like, ‘Really? What?’ How’s that! That’s how I was in the theater. I was like, ‘Oh my god. What we have done?'”

He elaborated on it in this recent interview:

“It’s not really an ending, but it’s also like, ‘You can’t do this with it. We are your die-hard fans, you can’t do this to us!” You will feel so betrayed in a way, but then so gratified and excited for what’s to come. Can’t divulge more, but be prepared for a shock. After 23 years of filming this stuff, it’s really hard at this stage to shock me and they’ve done me good.

We’ll find out how the movie ends soon enough when it hits theaters on May 19!
