Pixar announces the new short film UP CARL’S DATE – New Adventure. Same follower.

Pixar has announced a new animated short based on the 2009 film On. It is entitled Carl date and comes with the tagline “New Adventure. Same follower. You can check out a poster that was released for the short below, and the film was also recently screened for some members of the press and it sounds like it was quite an emotional experience.

The short was written and directed by Bob Petersson, which is also the voice of Dug. The story follows “one day in the life of Carl and Dug; bring things full circle to see how the love of a dog can change you for the better. According to io9, “Dug emotionally supports Carl when he agrees to go out with a friend, which is a really big step for him.”

The director shared during a Q&A session, “No one is ever going to substitute Ellie for Carl. This is just friendship. This is just to honor her, Ellie saying “go have a new adventure.” And that really tests it. Should he do it or not? It just seemed like the next logical step, and one conclusion to the story is that he’s finally committed to doing what Ellie wanted.

The film also pays homage to Ed Asner, who voices the character Carl Fredricksen. Talking about working with Asner, the director: “It’s fun, man. The boy is Carl Fredricksen. It’s so fun to work with him. You know, I grew up on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It was just a pleasure to be with him. He’s grouchy, but he had a great heart and… [was] very, very funny. We feel lucky to have been with him towards the end of his career, and I feel that honors him quite well.

Carl date will be released with the next Pixar movie Elementary on June 16.
