In the actor’s recent memoir, Did I ever tell you?he explained, “I was plagued by the usual insecurities,” as he wondered why he’d been cast in such a role while considering himself a “regular guy on screen.”

He added:

“Why me? I’m definitely not an action hero. The idea of me going hand-in-hand with Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger is just absurd. I’m more of the regular guy on screen. If I really had to be that kind of guy from action, I was already, I think, 45 years old, and as always I had left things about 10 or 15 years too late.

He went on to talk about the marketing campaign for the film, which focused on CGI dinosaurs instead of actors.

“The imposter syndrome would escalate later when we were out promoting the film. Universal Pictures’ more or less official joke was that, con Jurassic Park, they had set out to prove that they, with Spielberg, could make huge blockbusters without “movie stars”. That was true enough, but I think it annoyed us, the actors, a bit to remind ourselves from time to time that we weren’t really ‘stars’. He has also rather overlooked Laura’s well-established and well-respected careers [Dern]Jeff [Goldblum]and Dicky [Richard Attenborough]. As it turned out, we now know that Harrison Ford turned down the part, so the “no movie star” plan may not be entirely true.

Neill made sure to point out that he was only “slightly” bothered by the marketing, and was overall very appreciative and happy to be involved with the film:

“I stress the word ‘slightly’ because more than anything we were all so happy to work with Steven. And to work on something that would be absolutely revolutionary, as it turned out.

It’s completely understandable that the actors felt a little annoyed when the studio was making such a big deal about the actors being “less than” the biggest names in Hollywood. But the movie’s stars obviously got the last laugh, as the movie went on to become one of the biggest and best of all time.
