The story takes place during Christmas 1985, “as devoted Father Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers the startling secrets kept by his town convent, as well as some shocking truths about his own life.” This is the description from the book:
It’s 1985 in a small Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, coal merchant and family man Bill Furlong faces the busiest season. While delivering an order to the local convent early one morning, Bill makes a discovery that forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a church-controlled town.
Ciaran Hinds AND Emilia Watson they are also featured in the film with Tim Mielants direction. Mielants and Murphy have worked together before Peaky Blinders. The screenplay was written by Enda WalshMurphy’s longtime collaborator, and the story has been compared to a Dickens short story.
Murphy said in a statement, “I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Claire Keegan’s magnificent novel to the screen. We assembled a phenomenal creative team to make this film and found exceptional partners in AE, a studio led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, actors and directors I have admired for many years.”
Murphy is a talented actor and I have enjoyed the projects he has been a part of and the characters he has portrayed. It’s great to see him doing something that he’s really passionate about.
