Daniel Calparsoro returns to recover the aluniceros of ‘Hasta el cielo’ to build a second part in series format. Netflix and Vaca Films sign this continuation in an attempt by the director to give presence to the female voice: “In the film the female characters were the wife and lover of. It was very macho, even though it was real. This time we wanted to tell the story from Sole’s point of view.”.
The sole is Asia Ortega. She will have to fight to gain a foothold in the criminal gang of moonlighters that her father runs, but which she aspires to control. “It is not an act of rebellion or a whim”Ortega says, “It’s Sole’s way of reclaiming his place”. As for her character’s lead role, the actress is clear: “He was already playing. Sole has a lot to tell and this it was a gift”.
His father is Luis Tosar, that comes back under Rogelio’s skin to put the toughest and most realistic touch on the fiction. “The Best of These Characters”says the actor, “It’s that they’re real. They’re criminals, but they’re nice and show a lot of tenderness. That’s what always makes you want to side with them.” Even so, Tosar insists that the series insists don’t romanticize them: “It shows the stress and pressure they experience. It’s not easy being the bad guy”, series.
A sequel in serial form
When Calparsoro began research for the film ‘Hasta el cielo’, he realized the amount of information he had gathered. He was fascinated by the world of aluniceros and their textures, strokes and structure. Indeed, Ortega acknowledges that when they had recorded half of the film, they realized they had three or four hours of footage: “I told Daniel that this could be told in a series and thank God he was locked up in the house with Patricia (Vico) because of Filomena and they managed to finish shaping it.”
The director concludes: “We didn’t do the ‘One Hundred Years of Forgiveness’ series, they did ‘Paper House’, and that made us very angry. So we thought, that’s not going to happen to us again”, he says between laughter. “We had a lot of information that we knew we couldn’t fit into the script for the film. And we wanted to do something with it. All of a sudden the idea came to us to make this series and it seemed perfect because we had more edges, more characters and the opportunity to describe who these people are.” Calparsoro insists the story is about something real, very Spanish. “History is alive,” says Ortega.
New additions
A passionate Álvaro Rico is incorporated into ‘Hasta el cielo: la serie’ in this second part: “When I knew I was going to play the part, I wanted to talk to Daniel all the timeI was very heavy”. Rico embodies a police officer who has infiltrated the criminal gang who will try to blow it up from within. “I found it very interesting to make a structure that has been done in many American films“. Furthermore, Rico claims that he was unaware of the existence of these gangs, “I had seen the news on television of those moon landings in Madrid or Barcelona, but I didn’t know they were organized criminal groups, I thought they were isolated cases.” Nothing is further from reality.
‘Hasta el cielo: The series’ debuts on Netflix on March 17.
