Joe Goldberg is starting another new chapter at the end of You season 4. After many murders, kidnappings, and psychotic breaks, Joe and Kate fled London and made a fresh start in New York City. Joe has been more direct with Kate about her murderous ways than her past loves, and she’s accepted him for who he is. So is Kate different? Or could she end up like Beck and Love? hollywood life spoke EXCLUSIVELY with You showrunner whey bet about Joe and Kate’s future.

“I think when we leave them at the end of the season, they’re very happy with each other,” Sera said. “We don’t know exactly how much she’s disclosed, but no matter what I’ve told her, she hasn’t lived a life where the word murder would have scared her. Her father was her father, so her frame of reference for her behavior is slightly different than that of most of us. But I think the answer is in the question, like, I’m not sure if there is a “one”. The “one” must be Joe, not looking outside himself for all the things that really concern him, his way of moving in the world, his honesty. So as long as he keeps thinking that he’s going to have a perfect life because of a woman, I think there’s going to be a problem.”
In the final moments of season four, Joe looks out the window and sees Rhys’ reflection in the mirror. Joe became obsessed with the real Rhys Montrose after capturing Marienne. After a psychotic break, Rhys became a figment of Joe’s imagination, the source of all of Joe’s darkness.
“I’m not sure,” Sera said whether or not Rhys will return in a potential season 5. “I’d say we love him. I think the question we are left with is what does a truly integrated Joe look like?

Sera noted that Joe had always “lied to himself” in previous seasons about his intentions. “The only reason he hasn’t heard anything from the 15 or so people he killed is that he keeps telling himself that it was an isolated case and that he’s not a killer. We were very curious to know what he would have been like if he hadn’t felt affected by this, if he hadn’t had the same sense of guilt as before.
The showrunner noted that the show has pulled in fight club in season 4, and the Rhys/Joe storyline had been in the works for some time. “It’s sort of a reward and achievement for making it through to season 4,” Sera said. hollywood life. “When you establish that your character’s mental health isn’t improving this season. You don’t necessarily have to face many consequences in the outside world. He gets away with a lot of things, but you can’t run away from what you’ve done inside. He really bit the mind during everything he did and what we saw. We knew we wanted to build someone who could essentially embody all those misguided survival instincts, but also not have the “good Joe” hesitation. It was more a question of: what is this person like? Should we write a male or female character? Will they be British? All these kinds of questions.
In the past, Joe’s obsessions were rooted in romance. Joe’s obsession with Rhys introduced a new side to the character. Sera talked about exploring other types of “deep love” in season 4.
“When we first pitched the show, we said that every season we would dive deep into love and obsession in some way,” Sera said. “But we’ve always said there will always be romance. Joe is a very romantic guy and lives for romantic love. But there are many kinds of very deep love and many ways to fall in love with someone. This has been kind of erotomania season, if you will. It just occurred to us that he maybe he would become an obsessed stalker of a public figure if he had a strong enough parasocial relationship with them.
One of the biggest twists of season four was that Marienne never ran away from Joe after he found her. He kept her locked in a cage in London. With Nadia’s help, Marienne managed to free herself from Joe’s clutches by faking his death. Hollywood life Sera asked if we will see Marienne again in the future.

“Marianne is in no condition to be motivated by revenge,” the showrunner stressed. “She knows that if he knows she’s alive, then she and her daughter are in danger and no one has fought harder than she has to have a normal life with a child. But that being said, we haven’t delved into that specific story yet, but we’ve always had this idea that anyone who is alive and knows about the deal with Joe, especially people whose lives he completely destroyed, of which there are several, each of them I could go back.
Speaking of comebacks, Love and Beck returned to one of Joe’s nightmares when his repressed memories surfaced in his mind. “We felt strongly that we wanted to bring back some of the aspects from previous seasons of the show. I think it’s funny to see him show up clean-shaven at the end because it’s like Joe’s back in New York. Seeing Beck and Love again has been a way for us to make all these seasons a little more circular,” Sera explained. You The fourth season is now available on Netflix.
