Illumination Entertainment/Universal Films The Super Mario Bros. Movie will open worldwide on Wednesday, April 5, before the Easter weekend. It was scheduled for Good Friday, April 7.
In one of the biggest openings of the spring, the animated film, starring Chris Pratt, Chris Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, Jack Black and more, will take advantage of the United States’ spring break for fans around the world to experience it simultaneously. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the picture will be released in more than 60 markets on opening day.
Ten markets for Super Mario Bros. in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe will open on various dates throughout April and May, including Japan, where it will open on April 28, timed to coincide with the Golden Week holiday.

Should this film take off big, it would be a huge win for Nintendo on the big screen. The last Super Mario Bros The 1993 film, a live-action adaptation of the popular Buena Vista video game franchise starring the late Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, was intended to be a summer blockbuster at the time but cost $40 million to produce with ‘ a worldwide gross of nearly $39 million.
The Super Mario Bros The animated film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo and co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo.
