Deadline’s SAG Awards Live Blog

Welcome to Deadline’s 29th Annual SAG Awards Live Blog. Join me as I share color commentary, instant analysis and hopefully some insight into Sunday pricing.

Traditionally, the SAG Awards have been an often unbelievable barometer of how the wind is blowing at the Oscars, at least when it comes to the reigning winners. They have a more patchy record when it comes to television, often a few beats behind the Emmys, but not always. SAG is certainly capable of surprises, so it would be a nice twist on the season if they put it on tonight.

Last year’s film winners were literally copied at the Oscars, going 4-for-4 with SAG in the acting categories and helping launch KODA A Best Picture Oscar when it sometimes (but clearly not always) won the predictive equivalent of SAG’s Outstanding Cast. The same pressure in the casting category and the infectious acceptance of the South Korean actors on stage really contributed to the ultimate and historic victory, I think parasite two years earlier.

The SAG Awards will take place later this year in awards season, just two weeks before Oscar Sunday and just four days before the final voting for the 95th Academy Awards beginse annual Oscars. The SAG’s findings could have major implications, but for the first time in decades, this year’s ceremony has no TV deal or exposure, having been abandoned by TNT/TBS, its legacy broadcast partners. The ceremony will take place on Netflix’s YouTube channel before the streamer takes over broadcast rights next year. The impact it could have will likely be negligible, as many headlines will come from tonight’s show and the eventual winners, and the eyes of many Oscar voters will see it. Experts are predicting almost everywhere that the big casting award will go everything everywhere at once and the A24 sleeper hit seems to be up for grabs, but it could also win individual trophies in the drama races. Stay tuned as we find out if this film cements or stumbles on its Oscar-winning status.

On the TV side, popular titles like Abbot Primary School And The White Lotus – Sicily are favourites, but again there are many scenarios at play. Join me for all the fun.
