When asked if a darker ending that saw Kang win and Ant-Man lose was being considered, the director told the Inside Total Film podcast, “We talked about a lot of endings, like you do in these movies.”

In the cut of the film that has been released, the entire ant family escapes the Quantum Realm after defeating Jonathan Major’Kang the Conqueror. Reed went on to talk about the film being an ensemble piece and how some of the discussions were about who would survive and who would die:

“In a film that’s sort of an ensemble piece, there’s always the discussion [of]: who gets out alive? Who doesn’t? All this kind of stuff. This being the third, we came to the conclusion very early on that the family would live to see another day. Kang is another story.”

Previously, Reed explained why Ant-Man was the best choice to face Kang in Quantum Mania, saying:

“We got excited about introducing Kang, one of Marvel’s great villains, into the movies – who will be the first Avenger to face him? We loved the idea that Scott and Hope were the most unlikely Avengers to go against him.

“On paper, it’s an incredibly lopsided match. There was dramatic tension from the very beginning. I was like, ‘Well, how is that going to work? How is that going to be a challenge anyway? What’s the story going to be?’ We like that challenge and also its mystery.”

What do you think of the dynamic of Ant-Man and Kang in the film? Are there other ways you would have liked to see the end of the film?
