The finale of the second season of the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian it was a shocking and exciting twist on an already great story. In the episode, entitled “The Rescue”, we saw Mando, Fennec Shand, Boba Fett and Cara Dune set off to commandeer an Imperial shuttle, snatch Dr. Pershing from the clutches of some Imperial officers and find a way into the Light Cruiser, where Moff Gideon had Grogu. The whole thing wrapped up with the reveal of Luke freaking out Skywalker going into the story, ready to take The Child to a safe place to train as a Jedi, and a sincere helmetless goodbye between Mando and Grogu. Fans went crazy for the finale and its great storytelling got us all the more excited for season 3.
But that was no easy feat to accomplish! Just like with Marvel surprises, the show’s writers and directors had to go to great lengths to keep this surprise under wraps. Series creator Jon Favreau recently spoke about the process in an interview with Empire magazinesaid:
“We shot Luke’s scene with a stunt double. The character of him was called Plo Koon in the script, he had an alien head in the art of production. R2-D2 has been painted green. There were many subterfuges. When R2D2 comes, that’s when he gets me. He was my Baby Yoda.
Favreau went on to praise the director of the finale, Peyton Reed (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania), who he called “a great partner in that episode. We had so much fun revealing things piece by piece. The X-wing, the lightsaber and then John Williams’ score, amazing. But the best part about making the show so far is that the two biggest surprises haven’t been leaked or spoiled beforehand.
“We’ve had some leaks from the show, but Baby Yoda hasn’t been spoiled and Luke hasn’t been spoiled. It was like everyone had to open a Christmas present at the same time.
It’s so cool and rare these days that you don’t hear huge spoilers about big name movies and shows in the mainstream fandoms before you watch them. They obviously have a great crew and set and very locked down over there in the studio. The Mandalorian Season 3 will premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, March 1.
