In the superhero genre, the industry has this idea that only female directors can play female characters. That’s a troubling prospect for director James Cameron, who said the day will come when a woman will be given the chance to pick up a Batman movie and bring her perspective to her character.
In an interview for Time magazine, James Cameron said action films and superheroes directed by women are needed. And it is that, in the film industry, a female director is given a tape of the style, when it comes to a female character, which for the director of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is a problem to expand the landscape.
“It took a female director to own a great action movie, even though Kathryn Bigelow had been doing it for a long time. She would have turned down any superhero movie she was offered if she was a female lead. And that’s the healthiest perspective, I think, personally. Why don’t women direct the male characters? Ask a woman to direct Batman. It’s interesting.”
In his statement, James Cameron Says Kathryn Bigelow Wouldn’t Make Superhero Movies. Bigelow is the director of some Oscar-winning films, such as ‘Fear Zone’, ‘Darkest Night’ or ‘Detroit: Conflict Zone’. Furthermore, she is Cameron’s ex-wife, and one of the few filmmakers still active, and who has had no bearing on taking over this type of cinema.

Will a woman direct the new Batman movie?
Within the announcements of films and series for HBO Max that James Gunn presented for the future of the EUDC, ‘The Brave and the Bold’, the new Batman film, was presented, which will also feature an all-new actor in costume bat like most of the bat family, like Damian Wayne, who becomes Robin, and who is the real son of Bruce.
The new Batman movie is due out in 2025 and there are no names associated with the production yet, meaning there’s no word on whether a woman could direct a Batman movie. But James Cameron’s idea is for a woman to take over a male superhero film, be it Marvel or DC Comics, and these companies will have many names in the future.
The idea of seeing a female director of a superhero movie with a male lead could give the genre a new take on what to expect from this type of production. However, there may still be many industries that feel this is an issue that needs to be addressed.
