It seems that the recognition of the Academy is too important for the history of cinema, and although many titles owe their prestige to this award, the truth is that many films find their space within their own means. Like these suspenseful detective stories that never received an Oscar, but are now considered undisputed cinema classics.

And is that to become an Oscar-winning film, the producers behind each title must campaign for it to be considered, or if it is a title with great political or financial clout, the Academy will do everything possible to take it into consideration, which many do suspense and crime thrillers are excluded from the nominations.

From the mind of Nicolas Winding Refn, we have one of best action crime thrillers of the last decade. This is ‘Drive’, the neo-noir masterpiece starring Ryan Gosling which is now considered a classic of the genre. The story follows a professional racer and stuntman who gets drawn into the criminal underworld when an assignment goes wrong. Available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

fight club

One of the best thrillers and one that became an instant classic, and not even a statuette it took home is ‘Fight Club’, directed by David Fincher, and starring Brad Pitt with Edward Norton. It’s about a man who meets another man and with whom they start a fight club all over the United States, with whom they build an empire. Available on HBO Max, Star+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Denis Villeneuve is also one of those directors whose awards don’t represent how great of a visionary he is. And for example, ‘Prisoners’, one of the best detective and mystery films of recent years, with Hugh Jackman, Paul Dano and Jake Gyllenhaal, about two families who lose their daughters, and everything suggests that a mentally challenged boy has them kidnapped.

Uncut gems

And finally, another of the thrillers that proved that genre doesn’t matter, if it’s done with heart, any story can be worthy of an Oscar. This is ‘Uncut Gems’, a crime film by the Safdie brothers, which gave one of the best performances by Adam Sandler. The story follows a jeweler who makes high-stakes bets, risking his reputation for his family, company and business. Available on Netflix.
