One of the biggest criticisms of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania it was the shoddy visual effects work. It was one of the most annoying aspects of the film because you would think that when you are dealing with a big budget tent pole film from Marvel Studios, they would like to offer the best quality work.

Well, even the VFX artist who worked on the film knows this isn’t their best work, and in a recent article published by Vulture, three artists tackle the CGI work and why it wasn’t as good as it should have been.

People, who use pseudonyms in the interview, say they were “severely understaffed” and faced an “unrealistically short deadline” to finish the film in time for its February debut. They explained that they spent up to 80 hours a week trying to do everything.

One of the sources, “Jim”, revealed that Marvel ended up taking several VFX artists away from them to work with Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverwhich was in post-production at the same time as Quantummania. As you know, that movie has disappointing visuals.

Jim said, “For Ant-Man, there were a lot of editorial changes towards the last third and fourth of the project that came too late. There is a point of no return. Why certain things were changed, why certain notes have been sticking around longer than they should have been — that’s about Marvel. But it definitely caused a lot of tension and turmoil and burden on everyone.

Marvel Studios has faced backlash for the way it treated these artists, and you can read a detailed report on that here. Jim went on to explain that most of these artists keep quiet because they don’t want to “jeopardize their livelihoods” with their grievances. They have to work to make money, and if they talk about how Marvel is treating them, Marvel could dump them.

Jim goes on to explain how he and the other artists are confused as to why the studio, which has the resources and deep pockets to produce high quality movies, isn’t willing to dig deeper and give them what they need to make. produce great CGI effects. He has an answer… greed.

He says: “A lot of us are sitting here thinking, ‘The money is there. Why doesn’t he come down?’ Marvel spending a little more money to pay more VFX people wouldn’t make much difference to the top executives. But if it boils down to them not being comfortable with their bank numbers and we working our way out, we lose every time. Honestly, I compare it to human greed.

Jim went on to share that all of this is why the movie is getting bad reviews. “I think there was so much potential for this story, for visual effects in general. I think the movie is getting the reviews it’s getting because Marvel is doubling down as much as possible on the restrictive quality. They are squeezing the blood out of the stones. And we’re out of blood.

Damnation.
