BBC removes Will Ferrell story after being duped by fake Twitter account

EXCLUSIVE: The BBC pulled a story about Will Ferrell from their website after it was misled by a non-BBC Twitter account anchorman Actor.

Ferrell has been on a football-type tour of the UK this month, attending several games and mingling with fans.

He visited London’s Loftus Road on Tuesday to watch Queens Park Rangers take on Sunderland and recorded a pre-match video mocking the visiting team.

“Sunderland – oh, the tears of sadness you will experience tonight, dripping from your face into your mouth and drowning in sadness, I can only imagine,” he said.

After the match, verified Twitter account @OfficialWillF wrote: “Haway man, sorry @SunderlandAFC”, along with a screenshot of the “Tears of Sadness” quote.

The BBC’s Tyne and Wear website ran a story based on the tweet, with the caption: “QPR fan and actor Will Ferrell apologizes for mocking Sunderland fans.”

However, the company did not realize that the Ferrell account was a spoof. The blue verification mark was likely obtained through Elon Musk’s premium Twitter Blue, which led to impersonators impersonating celebrities and brands.

The BBC said: “In a BBC News Online article we incorrectly stated that QPR fan and actor Will Ferrell had apologized for mocking Sunderland fans. A quote is from a verified Twitter account , but is not from the actor. We removed the article entirely as it was solely based on the apology.”

Ferrell has also attended football matches at Wrexham, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and Manchester City.
