The film world lost one of its most versatile cinematographers this week with the death of British veteran Oliver Wood at the age of 80.
Wood, who moved to New York when he was 19, is best known for his work on die hard 2 (1990), Face/off (1997), Crazy Friday (2003), Talladega Nights: The Ballad by Ricky Bobby (2006) and The Springs franchises (2002-2007).
He recently worked with Daniel Espinoza on the Marvel film disease (2022), on which the couple previously collaborated Safe home (2012) and child 44 (2015).
Wood got his first professional break working on a cult crime novel for director Leonard Kastle The Wedding Killers (1969). In the late 1970s and 1980s, he directed numerous B-movies and independent films as well as music videos and commercial projects.
This was Wood’s job as cinematographer for 53 episodes of the TV crime drama Miami Vice, where he served as primary DP between 1987 and 1989, brought him to the attention of movie screen producers. Working on titles ranging from Face/off (1997) to Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013) made him a craftsman who was always in demand.
Wood was nominated for a BAFTA The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007. He has worked extensively with director Paul Greengrass Bourne trilogywhere he employed multiple cameras to create a distinctive, naturalistic effect by quoting films such as The Battle of Algiers as an influence that in turn introduced an era-defining style to Hollywood action films in the early 2000s.
