As the platform war escalates with Netflix in the midst of a shared account crisis or House of Mouse announcing animated sequels after losing subscribers to Disney+, Apple TV+, for its part, wants to continue making a name for itself based on the original products. It has already shown that it has dominated the format of the series with award-winning examples such as “Ted Lasso” or “Separation”, but the apple company also wants to continue creating homegrown films that are successful, as well as having little gems in its catalog such as the Oscar-winning “CODA: The Sounds of Silence” or the Cartoon Saloon animated prodigy “Wolfwalkers”. Because of this, Apple has hired Benjamin Caron to direct ‘Tricksters’, this noir thriller starring Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith and Briana Middleston. We had the opportunity to have a chat with the director and the cast in an interview for eCartelera.
Moore and Stan play Madeline and Max, two con artists who always have deception after deception up their sleeves. Tom and Sandra, the characters of Justice and Briana, will meet on their way, two (in theory) innocents who will be plunged into this web of lies and falsehoods. “I loved the script, it was very surprising”Moore commented, “It is a pleasure to read something that completely strikes you with a certain surprise. And I like movies about people trying to satisfy their desires through relationships.”.
One of the virtues of ‘Embaucadores’ is its blending of styles and genres, combining thriller and romance with comedy and suspense. However, this was not an interpretative problem for Middleston: “It was very helpful to live in the present. We tried not to dwell too much on the storyline and to trust the people around us, the actors who helped us create these performances”. Regarding this mix of genres, director Benjamin Caron highlighted that it is due to a change that has taken place in recent times: “Traditionally, when you make one type of film, you have to go with it, with the same tone and feeling. If you make a horror film, it has to be a horror film. I think the audience is more sophisticated now, they like playing with genres. ‘Parasites’ is proof of that”.

New York and influences
In addition to directing the new Apple TV installment, Caron has also been attached to film the latest episode (so far) of ‘Sherlock’, The Final Problem. He explained that, in the same way that Sherlock Holmes can’t be set anywhere other than New York: “It is the most representative city of the American dream, it worships those who succeed in capitalism”.
As for his influences, the director cited films such as ‘Drive’, by Nicolas Winding Refn. “I remember those precious driving sequences”Explain, “In ‘Tricksters,’ very early on, a lot of the writing was internal, it was like going from an apartment to a bar, in Midtown Manhattan, to a penthouse. I also didn’t want to do some kind of postcard version of New York. I think driving through the bridges and neighborhoods of New York was a good way to create atmosphere and tone and feeling.”.
‘Cheaters’ Now it’s available on AppleTV+.
