Fire Of Love, the Oscar-nominated tale of Lovers-Scientists, returns to theaters for Valentine’s Day

EXCLUSIVE: Scientist, explorer, lover. Katia and Maurice Krafft, the stars of the Oscar-nominated documentary fire of love, were all those things. On Valentine’s Day, National Geographic and Neon are bringing the film about the unhappy couple back to theaters for one night only.

As part of the engagement, the film will be shown in various theaters in New York (AMC Empire 25, AMC Lincoln Square, Regal Union Square), Los Angeles (AMC Century City, AMC Santa Monica Promenade, Laemmle Monica Film Center), San. Francisco (AMC Kabuki, AMC Metreon), as well as Chicago, Boston, Washington, DC, King of Prussia, Penn. and other cities.

The film will air Saturday February 18th at 9pm PST on KABC and WABC Sunday February 19th at 1pm EST. It is currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

Director Sara Dosa received her first Oscar nomination for documentary, the highest-grossing film of any Oscar-nominated non-fiction film. It’s the story of a French couple who, as NatGeo puts it, “loved each other and loved volcanoes.” The Kraffts’ studies greatly improved the scientific understanding of volcanic activity around the world, but their passion led to their undoing when they traveled to Japan in June 1991 to capture Japan’s smoldering Mt. was killed by a pyroclastic flow that escaped from a channel and rushed towards them.

“I’m excited fire of love is back in theaters – especially for Valentine’s Day,” Dosa said in a statement. “We see our film as a love triangle between two people and volcanoes, exploring the mysteries of our planet and the human heart. I am especially happy that the public is getting to know the Kraffts 30 years after their deaths – especially as Katia is once again celebrated as one of the early pioneers of earth science, whose work inspired women of her day to push sexist boundaries, and her legacy continues to do so today then.

fashion calls fire of love “The date night documentary we need right now.” Rolling Stone describes it as “the greatest lava-fueled love story ever told.” The movie premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for Oscar, Bafta, PGA, DGA and ACE awards. Filmmaker and actress Miranda July, who will voice the film, will provide a special introduction to the documentary for the Valentine’s Day theatrical screenings.
