Sony Pictures is looking to revive its classic 1997 slasher horror franchise I know what you did last summer with a new sequel. The project is under development with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson set to direct, and the best part of the news is that Jennifer LoveHewitt AND Freddie Prince Jr. are in talks to reprise their roles!
Neal H. Moritz is also in talks to return as a producer, with Leah McKendrick on board to write the script. The project is still in early development, so we still have a long way to go before we see anything from it.
I’m not surprised this is happening, especially with the successful revival of the Scream franchise. The idea for the sequel came from Robinson and McKendrick, who reportedly “blew studio execs when they pitched this idea for a sequel last fall, especially given the recent success of the Scream franchise.”
The film was set up as a “passing the torch” type sequel “in which the original cast members are brought back while the next generation cast members are added to the ensemble, similar to films like Scream or Creed.”
Another major factor in the project’s progress was the recent success of the Netflix film Robinson Take revengethat was really good!
In the original film, “one year after running over a fisherman and throwing his body in the water, four friends are reunited when Julie (Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter telling her their crime has been seen. While chasing who she thinks she is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a butcher hook. The bloodletting only escalates from there, as the hook-wielding killer continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and Ray (Prinze Jr.).
There are no plot details to share regarding the sequel. I enjoyed the original films of the horror franchise and this sequel could be a lot of fun…if the story they made up is really good. We’ll just have to wait and see! But, while we wait, what do you think of the news!?
